the mouth of the sirens
Who has not felt
The call of the sea maw - the lure of the gull
The seduction of salt in the heart of the blue
Rip tide
Hang onto your people and friends, the fastening
isn’t as strong as it looks
And it’s full of surprises. This skin
So silky and brown
Once was wrapped round a seal and these fins
Aren’t for typing a letter or walking the streets
And these eyes aren’t for reading a newspaper, only the mist
From Fastnet to Irish Sea, Shannon to Rockall
I was cast out adrift from my shadow and where
there is sunlight there’s glitter and sparkles and where
There is shadow that’s where you see down
Through the kelp and the bladderwrack, down
Through the waters. The mouth
of the sirens, so-called. It’s the song
Of the seals that can get to you - tugging at strings
Every time and the jump and the dive and the thundery
storms. Gales expected
From Malin to Hebrides, Bailey to Fair Isle
To Forties and Cromarty
North East or North Westerly
Lundy - Fastnet - Irish Sea
Oh wrap me in fog - showers expected
It is good - it is rising more slowly
Viking - North Utsire - South Utsire - Forties - Cromarty - Forth - Tyne - Dogger - Fisher - German Bight - Humber - Thames - Dover - Wight - Portland - Plymouth - Biscay --Trafalgar - FitzRoy - Sole - Lundy - Fastnet - Irish Sea - Shannon - Rockall - Malin - Hebrides - Bailey - Fair Isle - Faeroes - Southeast Iceland -
